Alfred Leon
"Sonny" Boyd, Jr.
October 19, 1940 – January 13, 2022
Funeral services for Mr. Alfred Leon "Sonny" Boyd, Jr., 81, of Jayess, Mississippi will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 17, 2022, at Capps Funeral Home with Brother Michael Knippers and Brother David Hedden officiating.
Mr. Sonny passed away at his home in Enon, Mississippi on Thursday, January 13, 2022. He was born October 19, 1940, in Tylertown, Mississippi to the late A. L. and Lurlene W. Boyd. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by four siblings, David Boyd, Juanita Allred, Ruth Thornhill, and Mary F. "Molly" Boyd; one nephew, Brooks Huhn; his wife, Hope Boyd; one daughter, Vanessa Ann Boyd; and a granddaughter, Maya Ashlynn Rushing.
Mr. Sonny's career as a dairy farmer spanned more than a half of a century. He served on numerous county, state, and regional boards, always advocating for the dairy industry in the Southeastern U. S. He loved teaching young people about agriculture and shared his knowledge every way he could, no matter if it was hiring teenagers to work on the farm during the summer or helping kids show cattle in 4-H. Most mornings were spent with his coffee, in quiet contemplation over how he could make his farm and community better. He was the founding father of Enon Fire Department, serving as its Chief for many years. He also worked as County Fire Coordinator where he helped establish the 9-1-1 road mapping system we are accustomed to today as well as improving the department's class rating which lowered homeowner insurance premiums in the district. His grandchildren and WWII were his favorite pastimes, although the two didn't always mesh well.
Survivors include one sister, Grace Huhn (Louie); a son, Ryan Boyd (Becky); a daughter, Tanya Rushing (Toney); six grandchildren, Brett Boyd, Reece Boyd, Mallory Boyd, Tristan Rushing, Aaron Rushing (Jenna), and Kristi Johnson (Ken); two great-grandchildren, Peyton Johnson and Levi Johnson; two stepdaughters, Angela Cutrer and Wendy Ravencraft (Brad), and their children and grandchildren, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, family, and friends. He also leaves behind his constant companions, Bella and Tovi.
Visitation will be at Capps Funeral Home Sunday, January 16, 2022, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, and also on Monday, January 17, 2022 from 10:00 AM until service at 11:00 AM.
