Obituary

Ellen Hunter Brumfield, 93, died Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Camellia Estates, McComb, MS. Born March 28, 1932, in Atlanta, GA, she was the daughter of the late John Earl and Emma Hunter.

Ellen loved to read all kinds of books, particularly her morning devotionals and the Holy Bible which she read from cover to cover six times. Bird watching intrigued her, and she could identify many species. Hummingbirds were her favorite. She was not known for her athleticism, but she discovered snow skiing when she was in her forties and could glide down a mountain with ease, making several ski trips to Colorado and New Mexico. She was an avid fan of LSU football and the Saints.

A prolific needle worker, she excelled in needlepoint and embroidery. Her other pastimes included solving crossword puzzles along with playing word and computer games. Dominoes was also a preferred activity, and she played regularly with a group of fellow enthusiasts.

As an educator, she taught general science, biology, chemistry and physics for nearly 15 years at Tylertown High School. A graduate of Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, she earned her master's degree in science education from Middle Tennessee State University, graduating number one in a class of more than 1,200.

Ellen was also an accomplished musician, serving many years as pianist for Tylertown Baptist Church. While she was in college she played with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and she enjoyed listening to a variety of music, particularly the tunes of Willie Nelson and Tony Bennett.

Loving dogs was a big part of her life. In addition to being a dog owner as well as a pet sitter for friends, the neighborhood canines always knew they could visit her house for treats.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Tallie Odus Winn, Jr.; her second husband, Lacy H. Brumfield; and her daughter, Tallie Ellen Casciola. She is survived by her son, Frank Odus Winn (Valerie) of Gautier; two granddaughters, Leslie Brewer (Blake) of Summit, and Virginia James of McComb, and six great-grandchildren.
