Obituary

Gary Michael Lawrence Sr.

Gary Michael Lawrence Sr., 75, of Tylertown, Mississippi, passed away on April 24, leaving behind a life full of hard work, stories, and a few projects he fully intended to finish “one of these days.”

Born in Tylertown, Mississippi, Michael “Big Mike” remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his life. In 1976, he took over the family business, Lawrence Jewelry, continuing a legacy built on craftsmanship, integrity, and attention to detail. He also served for many years as a Rural Mail Carrier with the United States Postal Service, faithfully delivering mail through all conditions and taking great pride in a job done well.

Michael believed there was a right way to do things—and he usually knew exactly what it was. He built his life around dedication to his work, pride in his family, and a strong sense of doing things properly. He was known for his ability to fix just about anything, offer advice when it was asked for, and turn everyday tasks into lessons that usually stuck with you.

Outside of work, Michael enjoyed motorcycles and unique automobiles, especially anything with character. Alongside a close friend, he proudly helped construct two airplanes—projects that reflected his skill, determination, and willingness to take on challenges.

He especially valued time spent traveling to racing events in support of his son, Michael Jr., moments he took great pride in and looked forward to.

The son of the late D.C. and Lennie Mae Lawrence, he was also preceded in death by his brother Jerry Lawrence and daughter in-law Susie Childrey Lawrence. He is survived by his wife, Sheron Lawrence; his son, Gary Michael Lawrence Jr.; and his grandson, Austin Lawrence, who will remember him for his humor, his strong will, and the steady presence he brought to their lives.

Michael will be remembered for his loyalty, his work ethic, his love of machines and motion, and his ability to bring both laughter and perspective to those around him.

Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 3:00 p.m. on May 1, 2026, at Centerville Baptist Church in Lexie, Mississippi.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests taking a spirited drive, working on something with your hands, or doing a project your own way—just as Michael would have appreciated.
