Jimmie Nell Holmes
May 30, 1922 – July 18, 2021
Jimmie Nell was born on Tuesday, May 30, 1922, to Percy Bill Hinson and Mamie Aderine Hinson in Tylertown, MS. She was the fifth of their children and grew up in an even larger extended family filled with large family gatherings and lots of love. She passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021, at Walthall General Hospital in Tylertown, MS.
Jimmie Nell grew up in Tylertown, graduated from Tylertown High School, and went on to Hillman College in Clinton, MS. Later, she attended Business College in Jackson where she met the love of her life, Roscoe Thomas (Bill) Smith, a young soldier from Mt. Holly, NC, who was in flight training to get his wings to serve in the Army Air Corps. They married on February 8, 1943, and spent much of their early years apart as Bill served his country in WWII flying soldiers and supplies from North Africa across the Himalaya Mountains to China. Jimmie Nell was a strong woman receiving telegrams on three different occasions with Bill Missing In Action. Her family, friends, and faith sustained her. Thankfully, he did return, and they moved from Army bases in GA to SC to MT. Later, they were blessed with one daughter, Mignon Leigh, whom they both loved dearly and settled down in Tylertown, Mississippi, and faithfully served at Tylertown Baptist Church where she had grown up. Jimmie Nell worked at the Tylertown Bank and, later, as it became what is now known as Trustmark Bank, for 28 years. She loved helping her Tylertown friends and family. She also loved taking everyone treats, and her chocolate fudge was known throughout Walthall County as one of the Best. Jimmie Nell and Bill were big golfers and usually could be found at the Tylertown Country Club on Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays. After Bill passed away in 1972, she and her sister, Evelyn Bennett, Jean Crawford, and Linda Harvey golfed their way to Colorado to visit her daughter and family in Colorado Springs. What an adventure they had! In 1982, Jimmie Nell married Wilkie Holmes. They enjoyed traveling, golfing, and being with family. There was never a doubt in anyone's mind that Jimmie Nell loved Tylertown, Tylertown Baptist Church, and most of all, her family. Her life was complete with Mignon and Jimmy, their children, and her beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandson. Her love of family, her faith in God, and strength of character are all a part of her legacy she has passed on to all those who knew and loved her.
Jimmie Nell was preceded in death by her parents, Percy Bill and Mamie Aderine Hinson; her first husband, Bill Smith; her second husband, Wilkie Holmes; granddaughter, Candace Mignon Reagle; sisters, Wilma Grubbs (Alton), Mary Willie Hinson, Susan Hinson, Evelyn Bennett (Charlie); and many other family members dear to her heart.
