Lexie Mae McElveen
12/26/1925 – 02/20/2022
Lexie Mae McElveen, 96 of Tylertown, MS passed away Sunday, February 20, 2022 at the Walthall County General Hospital in Tylertown, MS. She was born Saturday, December 26, 1925 in Tylertown, Mississippi.
A private family graveside service was held on Sunday, February 27, 2022 at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Capps Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Lexie grew up working in the cotton fields and walking on a dirt road to attend school through the eighth grade. It was too far to walk to town to further her own education but she believed education was important. She always encouraged her children and their children to stay in school and get a good education.
Lexie loved her family and being around them celebrating birthdays, holidays, family reunions or just getting together. She especially loved watching her grandchildren play sports from Little League to college.
Lexie worked at Haspel's sewing pockets in men's pants during the day and the going across the road to work at Stogner's Dairy Bar in order to provide for her family. After Haspel's closed, Lexie began collecting burial dues and selling burial insurance for Capp's Funeral Home. She showed compassion and her love for people during their time of loss as she began to help conduct funerals.
Lexie's last job title was "the paper lady", delivering the Enterprise-Journal, to many residents in Walthall County and being sure she threw their paper just in the right spot. A good work ethic and being a hard worker was important to her, and she served as an example to her family.
Lexie's hobbies seemed to always be things she enjoyed but involved doing things for the benefit of her family such as quilting and crocheting. She made a quilt and a crocheted a coverlet for each family member. Even when putting together jigsaw puzzles, she wanted a family member to pick out a favorite and frame it as a keepsake.
In the past few years, she enjoyed circling words in word search books, visits from family and friends, as well as riding down the road taking in the sights.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years Eli McElveen; father Clarence David Bowman; mother Ida Mae Spence Bowman; brothers John "Buddy" Bowman and Vernon Bowman; sister Faye Rushing; son-in-law Bruce McGinnis.
Survivors include her daughters Linda McElveen, Cheryl McGinnis, and Marjorie Britt (Don); brother Daniel Bowman; sister Glynn Beard; grandsons James Williamson, Kristian Carter (Da'Nita), Bud Britt, JD Britt (Emily); granddaughters Judy Taylor (Randy), Tina Bryant, Megan Harrison (Justin), Cassie Carona, and Alyssa McGinnis; great grandsons Bryan Sartin (Brittany), Garrison Robinson, Dean Harrison, and Bryce McGinnis; great granddaughters Alanna, Kayci, and Charlie Carter, Gabriella Carona, Lila Dale Harrison, and Brylynn Britt; great-great grandsons Braylen and Bryson Sartin.
