Obituary

Funeral services for Mr. William Eugene Breland, 100, of Kokomo, MS will be held at 11:00 A. M. on Friday, November 23, 2018 at Hartman Hughes Funeral Home with Bishop Donald Dennee conducting.  Burial will be in the Darbun LDS Cemetery.

Mr. Breland was born July 09, 1918 in Greene County, MS to the late Gaines and Sarah Breland. He is also preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Breland, son Kenneth Breland, daughter Sandra Breland, five brothers, and four sisters.

William joined the Army Air Corps in 1939 and volunteered to go to Hawaii.  He was at Hickam Army Airfield on December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack.  He was immediately adjacent to the harbor and was looking at the USS Arizona when it sank.  He later served on Kwajalein and in the Ellice Islands on Funafuti.

After the war he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a 2 nd Lieutenant.  In the early 1950s he was a military attaché to the Canadian Air Force in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada.

He later was assigned to the Inspector General team and participated in two worldwide inspector teams taking him to such locations as Japan, Korea, London, Spain, North Africa and even Antarctica.

In the late 50s he was a Personnel Officer in the Military Air Transport Service.  He retired from the Air Force as a Major.

Mr. Breland was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many important positions, including a Bishopric, a Stake Presidency, and was a long-term Patriarch of the Hattiesburg, MS Stake.  Along with his wife, Dorothy, he served a full-time mission in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Cork and Dublin, Ireland.

He is survived his sons William Randall (Lynne) Breland and John Davis Breland, seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of family and friends.

Visitation will be at Hartman Hughes Funeral Home on Friday, November 23, 2018 from 10:00 A.M. until service time at 11:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Darbun LDS Cemetery Fund. Checks should be made out to: LDS Cemetery Fund and mailed to Randy Breland at 8 Summer Magee Rd Kokomo, MS 39643.
